Prime Implicate Normal Form for ALC Concepts
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we present a new normal form for concept expressions in the description logic ALC which is based on a recently introduced notion of prime implicate. We show that concepts in prime implicate normal form enjoy a number of desirable properties which make prime implicate normal form interesting from the viewpoint of knowledge compilation. In particular, we prove that subsumption between ALC concepts in prime implicate normal form can be carried out in polynomial time using a simple structural subsumption algorithm reminiscent of those used for less expressive description logics. We provide a sound and complete algorithm for putting concepts into prime implicate normal form, and we investigate the spatial complexity of this transformation, showing there to be an at most doubly-exponential blowup in concept size. At the end of the paper, we compare prime implicate normal form to two other normal forms for ALC that have been proposed in the literature, discussing the relative merits of the different approaches. Proofs of all results can be found in an accompanying technical report [1].

Linkless Normal Form for ALC Concepts and TBoxes
In this paper we introduce a normal form for ALC concepts and TBoxes called linkless normal form. We investigate properties of concepts given in this normal form such as an efficient satisfiability test and the calculation of uniform interpolants. We further show a way to approximate a TBox by a concept in linkless normal form, which allows us to check certain subsumptions efficiently. This mak...
متن کاملA Knowledge Compilation Technique for ALC Tboxes
Knowledge compilation is a common technique for propositional logic knowledge bases. A given knowledge base is transformed into a normal form, for which queries can be answered efficiently. This precompilation step is expensive, but it only has to be performed once. We apply this technique to knowledge bases defined in the Description Logic ALC. We discuss an efficient satisfiability test as we...
متن کاملReasoning about Typicality in Preferential Description Logics
In this paper we propose a nonmonotonic extension ALC + Tmin of the Description Logic ALC for reasoning about prototypical properties and inheritance with exception. The logic ALC + Tmin is built upon a previously introduced (monotonic) logic ALC + T, that is obtained by adding a typicality operator T to ALC. The operator T is intended to select the “most normal” or “most typical” instances of ...
متن کاملThe Semi-Resolution Inference Rule and Prime Implicate Computations
The inference rule semi-resolution is introduced and shown to be complete for ground CNF formulas. It can be employed in a connection-graph setting, and preservation of the spanning property is shown to hold when activated links are deleted. Potential advantages from the employment of semi-resolution as the inference engine in prime implicate computations are brieey discussed .
متن کاملReasoning About Typicality in ALC and EL
In this work we summarize our recent results on extending Description Logics for reasoning about prototypical properties and inheritance with exceptions. First, we focus our attention on the logic ALC. We present a nonmonotonic logic ALC + Tmin, which is built upon a monotonic logic ALC+T obtained by adding a typicality operator T to ALC. The operator T is intended to select the “most normal” o...
